Today, May 2, 2025, is National Estuaries Day, and the Forgotten Coast has one of the best estuaries in the state of Florida. The Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve has been hosting its National Estuaries Day event for many years, and it is a great experience for the whole family if you’re in the area for your St. George Island beach vacation.

This year’s event will take place from 1:30 until 5:30 pm at ANERR. The public entrance to ANERR is at 108 Island Drive in Eastpoint. It’s a short drive from anywhere on the Forgotten Coast. If you’re coming from St. George Island, once you cross the bridge, you’ll find the entrance just to the right.

At this year’s event, there will be a live reptile exhibit, several touch tanks and sand art. All kids over three years old will receive a FREE T-shirt.
Our family attended the event at ANERR several years ago, and we had a great time. The ANERR partnered with the Gulf Specimen Marine Lab to organize a memorable occasion. There were touch tanks everywhere and our kids (and nieces) loved touching everything!
In addition to all of the activities in and around the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve, they had areas where you could learn about fire safety and the controlled burns that take place in our area.
There were discussions about local wildlife…

Arts and crafts that were focused on the estuary…

And they even had someone dressed as a dolphin to welcome all of the kids!

If you haven’t been to the Estuary in Eastpoint, National Estuaries Day is a fantastic time to take your first trip. We believe that National Estuaries Day is one of the biggest family-friendly events on the Forgotten Coast, and it should not be missed! It is probably the biggest event of the year at ANERR, and it will likely be busy. So show up, touch some sea creatures (and reptiles!) and have a wonderful time.
